Xbox to receive a wireless headset "do-over"

This site in it's Xbox only incarnation was no stranger to the Xbox 360's wireless headset. Unfortunately, all is not "lovedubby" when it comes to Microsoft's Wireless Headset for it's Xbox 360. Claims of high pitched noises, nonfunctional charging, inability to sync, or just plainly bad audio quality have been rampant for years since it's release. Was or is there a fix for these issues? Of course there is. Be prepared to shell out some more money to fix your issues if you have any by buying another headset.

This time out the headset is to have bluetooth functionality as well so that you can actually use it on something other than an Xbox 360. What a novel idea, huh? There are two modes of operation that allow you to switch between bluetooth and Xbox mode with a press of a button. But will this be better than the headset already on the market? We'll see.

Also announced with the new headset is a new media remote for Xbox 360. Have you been asking for one of those? You haven't? Neither was I. The guys and gals at Logitech I'm sure are shaking in their boots now. Fans of the Harmony Xbox 360 remote of yesteryear are likely to be the only customers for this remote if their OG remote has found some sort of violent death over the years.

Images of the new Headset and Media remote can be found here.

Thoughts On: Kinect, Kinect, Kinect

What everyone and their mothers should have gotten very clear from this weeks E3 2011 Xbox Media Briefing was one thing: YOU should have bought Kinect! or Let's hope YOU will/have Kinect! Is this a bad thing? Absolutely not. Kinect is a really nice piece of technology, yet, when it comes to games that you and I play the big fear is that what we love today (as in traditionally controlled games) will go away in favor of games pushing us toward motion and nothing but Motion. Fear is a powerful thing. So, why are we letting it ruin an otherwise harmless portion of our lifes? Videogames are obviously an important part of our lives if you are reading this. Seen in the video's below, it's beginning to appear that what developers are getting a grasp at is augmenting Kinect functionality into our so-called "hardcore games" instead of replacing so much of the interaction to a point where you feel left out if you've chosen thus far to not particapate in all of the wacky Kinect fun.

And of course, I could go on and on, but the real proof will be in the pudding once all of these Kinect "enhanced" titles release. Kinect or not, you will still be able to play your games the way you always have. Relax...

E3 2011: Get the lowdown on Forza Motorsport 4 Kinect Headtracking

One of the big new features coming to the 4th game in the Forza Motorsport franchise is headtracking via Kinect. Albeit you have to have Kinect to use this feature, the fact that headtracking is a doable undertaking now really affirms that we are indeed in the future. The below video shows off how the tech works and just how insane the future present day of videogames is.

The Witcher 2 is officially coming to the Xbox 360

There was a slight gasp by a portion of gamers outthere who where looking forward to The Witcher arriving on a console (Xbox 360) near you, but CD Projekt RED evetually let it be known that all hopes would be dashed as the game would not be coming to consoles. Yet, there was still hope when The Witcher 2 was announced. Would the sequel make it to the land of Xbox this time around? The answer to that question was up in the air once again, until now.

The below trailer given exclusively to Gametrailers lets the cat out of the bag for those who would like to experience The Witcher is some form that involves a gamepad hooked up to a console and not a PC. Aghast, your time is finally near.

Halo Reach's Defiant Map Pack officially announced

Rumor gets around these days mighty fast thanks to the internet and when it comes to Halo the exception is the rule in most cases. Whispers in the wind have been relaying word of the next Halo Reach Map Pack to be called the "Defiant Map Pack" and it turns out the whispers were right once again. The Defiant Map Pack that brings three new maps (one of which is the first ever new Firefight map) has been officially announced and to arrive in March 2011 with screens and video to boot (seen below).

Condemned, a mangled communications hub high above the planet, and Highlands, a Spartan training facility nestled in the mountains of Reach, or engage the Covenant directly on Unearthed, defending the entrance to a key titanium mine in the first Firefight DLC ever.

Paul Thurrott, you just don't get it!

It isn't wise to comment on opinion from others as opinion is just that, opinion. You have the right to say and do what you want in a differing manner about any and every topic. Yet, when you are wrong you are wrong. An so, we are brought back to the wonderfully mis-spoken words of Mr. Paul Thurrott. A man of varying opinion that continues to feed off of the proverbial bosom that is Microsoft is such a way that prevents him from seeing the forest from the trees time after time. There are those in the gaming press and there are those in the technology press. Both shall cross path's from time to time and both shall wage verbal war. A war that most do not pay attention to, but nevertheless it is most definitely there.

Now that the stage is somewhat set, lets get to the point. There are those who look at Microsoft with two minds. One of a technology platform company and one of a consumer electronics company (mostly in the vein of Xbox and Zune/Windows Phone). For those on the technology company bend the other side couldn't make any less since. Why would it? We all use tech everyday while consumer electronic tends to only fit in when we are ready for it (hence "gaming/music/movie time").

Now, before I continue I implore you to give Windows Weekly 193 a listen to hear what it sounds like when a man from the technology press gets his head up his own ass. And while that may sound a bit harsh mind you it's coming from a goober. Yes, I remember that Paul. Us games press goobers can't possibly understand the wit and wiseness that emanates from such tech royalty.

--

To set the tone further, it's actually been a little while since those past three paragraph's were written. Rash thoughts were most definitely flowing and it made every sense in the world to let the words of WinSupersite guru Paul Thurrott tear me a new one so it would justify the quick and nasty response I had ready.

Everything Paul said is the podcast referenced above isn't wrong. In fact he's right. Xbox should be its own company. I've thought this for quite sometime. It might as well be a different company already as it's run on such a slant from everything else "Microsoft" most gamers out there only see Microsoft to mean Xbox. A feat that seemed mere IMPOSSIBLE only 10 years ago before the official launch of the humongous black box that could. Unfortunately, much like The Social Network got the whole of the Facebook story wrong, so does Mr. Thurrott.

And here comes the quick money discussion. Something has to give. Is all of this about how much money you're making now or is it about pushing boundaries for the future? Microsoft is very much a Windows company. No one is going to argue that the lion share of their revenue is derived from the Windows group. Of course it is, its been a steam rolling train for what seems like forever in the computing world. Unfortunately when compared to Xbox things aren't so rosy in the bringing home the bacon department. Yet, Mr. Thurrott will continue to conveniently leave out the 10 years of Xbox versus the more than quarter century of Windows. Calling the latter entrenched into its market is much more than a simple understatement.

So, where does this leave us at? It leaves us at a point where its rather easy to ignore the strides Xbox has made in the gaming industry. Many of the innovations we've seen over the last ten years have come directly from the Xbox team. Albeit, you won't see any of that on a quarterly or yearly report. What about a digital store front on a stand-alone device, not for music, but for tangible software in Xbox LIVE Arcade years before Apple vaunted App Store? What about making HD a mandatory requirement? What about entering a market with the likes of Nintendo and Sony where both should have crushed Xbox? Sony was so far in a way the leader of the gaming world it was crazy for Microsoft to even bother. Yet, there did. There are no time machine equipped Deloreans to be had so why harp on the immense investment endured to make Xbox a success in the minds of it customers? Look at Sony now. They are just now (five years in with the PS3) getting back on their feet in a meaningful way with PlayStation. Who would have thought they would be chasing Xbox in many ways? Would there be a PlayStation Network if Xbox didn't push for Xbox LIVE the way they have?

It would be easy to keep going with example after example. Xbox is largely doing exactly what they do best, as Paul would say. Why walk away from that because they aren't bringing home enough of the bacon after only ten years against previous market juggernauts versus the unique market that is technology at large? The tech industry is not a direct simile to the game industry. The fact Paul doesn't get that is the long and short the discussion. Arguing for your point of view is cute and all, yet on if you understand both sides.

Microsoft's CES 2011 Keynote Highlights

The Consumer Electronics Show is here once again and the folks up in Redmond Washington are also without fail there as well to show off what's up next from Microsoft. To the liking of those in the gaming sector a great deal of Microsoft's Keynote was focused on Xbox 360, Kinect, and gaming on Windows Phone 7. Although things about Windows 7 were also talked about and shown lets focus on the gaming possibilities and the like. That's what you're here for isn't? There was lots of tauting of big numbers and here are the highlights as presented by CEO Steve Ballmer & Company.

  • Controller free Zune, Netflix, and Hulu Plus are coming this spring.
  • Avatar Kinect- A virtual meeting room with your friends through Kinect giving you a place to interact with each other's avatar as motion captured by you.
  • To date 50 million Xbox 360's have been sold.
  • Xbox Live has reached 30 million members.
  • Over 8 million Kinect sensor's have been sold through during the first 60 days of launch ( that's 3 million above projections of 5 million).
  • Fable Coin Golf headed to Windows Phone 7.
Of course there was more with tablets and low power laptops, but if gaming is what you ultimately care about there you have it.
