CNN gives its two cents on Kinect

It's always amusing to see the unabashed masses when they get their hands on tech they don't understand, especially when it's something that most geeks who live in the new have a hard time understanding themselves. That such thing is most definitely Kinect and so comes an obligatory report on Kinect from CNN. What you see below is a video that not only shows off once again that Kinect actually does work, but that it's still very much "in" to bask in the glory of not having have played a video game in a very long time.

Microsoft Confirms Kinect Launch Titles

When the 360 launched in 2005, it was accompanied by 18 games. Now, in 2010, as the release of the biggest accessory in the console's history looms, it looks like we'll only see a reduction of one overall title from the 360's actual Kinect launch line-up.

That's right, we'll be seeing 17 Kinect titles come the launch date of November 4th. Check out the full list below and let us know what you think will be awesome and what you think will be nothing more than a glorified tech-demo.

  • Adrenalin Misfits
  • The Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout
  • Dance Central
  • DanceMasters
  • DECA Sports Freedom
  • EA Sports Active w/ Heart Rate Monitor
  • Fighters Uncaged

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

Xbox Live Deals Abound!

New deals are popping up now for Xbox Live users, and good ones at that! First deal up, announced earlier this week, is a chance for Xbox Live Gold users to get some Microsoft points back! If you spend 2400 msp ($30 worth) in the month of October, you will be handed back 800 points when the calender turns to november. There's tons of new stuff to purchase this month - such as the brand new Borderlands DLC, the upcoming Left 4 Dead 2 content, or even the export key for Rock Band 2 into Rock Band 3 - and if you were on the fence for certain games (here's looking at YOU, Sonic Adventure), then now's the time to spring for it and get some cash back at the end of the month.

The second deal is a part of Microsoft's ongoing attempts to counteract the monthy Live price increase, but this one's a great deal. Available on the 360 dashboard only, if you purchase 24 months worth of Xbox Live in one sitting, NOT ONLY will you receive 15% off to give up a more reasonable $84 for two years, BUT you will also receive 1600 Microsoft points once the promotion period is over. That's definitely a lot of bang for your buck.

Happy saving folks!

EA Sports MMA demo now available

The beginning of the official showdown for MMA Supremacy (that's a play on words with the third dog in this race which is Supremacy MMA) is just about underway. EA Sports' entry into the Mixed Martial Arts sub-genre is to take on the current champ of UFC [insert year here]. But, can EA finagle their way into this space successfully too? Buying out rights from the competition isn't an option this time around, because hey, they're the new kid on the block this time around. The proof is in the pudding for sure as you can now try out EA's offering for yourself starting today.

Xbox LIVE Activity (for week of Sept 13)

With the release of Halo Reach it was certain to be one of the top games on Xbox LIVE during the week of it release, but where would it show up on the list? Can Modern Warfare 2 retain it's throne? And the short answer is yes. Hype on top of hype didn't help Halo Reach eclipse a title that's been on the market for nearly a year now. "Reaching" #1 on just one weeks sales would have been a major accomplishment for sure. To put things into perspective though, think about how many titles release and are no where to be seen even in the expanded top 20.

On a zombie note, Dead Rising 2: Case Zero is quite the hit ( with more like it to follow from other publishers for sure now) and so is Ska Studios' I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 on the Indie Games Channel, still.

Halo Reach's Original Soundtrack is available now

If there's anything fans and non-fans of Halo can agree on -- Halo has always had fantastic scores to accompany it.

Along with the release Halo: Reach, the game's Original Soundtrack composed by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is now available by way of licensing by Microsoft Game Studios and Sumthing Else Music Works. The Soundtrack can be downloaded from Sumthing Digital www.sumthingdigital.com and iTunes. For the 2-disc CD set, you can get your hands on that on September 28th at retailers.

New Controller with Improved D-Pad Unveiled

Amidst the outrage over the Xbox Live price increase, Microsoft seems like perhaps they wanted to show their fans that they do, in fact, listen to their needs. They're doing this by not only revamping the Play-and-Charge kit, but also the most complaine-about issue regarding the controller itself.

There's no denying that the first-party controllers to this point have had absolutely terrible D-Pads. While it's particularly noticeable in fighting games, like Super Street Fighter IV, the inaccuracies are obvious on platforming titles as well.

As shown in the picture above (taken from Major Nelson's official blog), the D-Pad will be reinforced with matte silver and can actually transform from a flat design to an outwardly-extended design by simply twisting your wrist. The controller will also feature a sleek new monotone color scheme in the buttons that goes well with the rest of the look.

Now for the downside. You cannot buy this new and improved controller separately. Instead, you must purchase the new Play-and-Charge kit, which will retail for $64.99 and will hit store shelves on November 9th. Check out the new packaging below and be sure to tell us what you think about the new controller in the comments section!
